Types of filters used in an air purifier
Here we have uploaded a video that explains in detail the types of filters used in an air purifier and how to look after and maintain the filters. It also explains when you need to replace the filters. In summary, any air purifier has three types of filters. These are
- HEPA filter
- Carbon Filter
- Pre-filer or dust filter
The most important filter is the HEPA filter which stops and filters the main pollutants in the air including PM2.5, viruses, and bacteria. The Carbon filter is used for absorbing smells from the room and absorbing some volatile organic compounds. The Pre-filter or dust filter stops large dust particles, hairs, and pet dander from entering the HEPA filter and enhances the life of the HEPA.
Both the carbon filter and HEPA filter are for one-time use only and cannot be washed or reused after some time. The usual lifetime of both these filters is 1200 to 1500 hours after which they have to be replaced. Some people try to vacuum these after some time but it does not enhance the life or improve the effectiveness of the filter. HEPA filter turns almost totally black and that is the time to replace it.
